Image Courtesy: Instagram Ever since the fateful day on 30 July 2024, when Wayanad in Kerala, was hit by the catastrophic landslides, day after day, hour after hour, a certain numbness set in. It is a numbness that results from seeing hundreds of people, men, women, and children dead, some floating in rivers several kilometres away in the most visceral display of nature’s uncompromising transfiguration. Equally terrifying is the human bodies floating in the Chaliyar River in Pothukallu panchayat in Malappuram district about 12 kilometres away from the location of the landslide. These bodies were washed away by the gush of water from the hills that spat out death for hundreds of people. Some bodies are dismembered and now people are collecting human limbs from the river shore. In the numbness, it wasn't easy to find words of consolation. Blood has dried up, the blood of humans. You can smell the dried up blood of the man of the future in your surroundings. The blood of humans is the water of the soil. Humanity’s blood is in the water of the earth. In Kerala, the culture is exceptionally sensitive towards the water. However, because the culture is a consumer-centred one, water deficiency threatens in the scarcity of drinking water only. The consumerist culture doesn’t bother too much about the scarcity of water in agricultural pursuits. The thought process is that someone would grow the food we want and bring it to the market. If we have the money, why bother thinking about who cultivates all the food and how. Deep within the culture of this land, I have always sensed an agrarian spirit. This spirit has dried up due to two reasons, in my opinion: availability of opportunities in gulf countries and crazes for white-collar jobs. Nature has a way of doing away with its problems. Man has looked at these ways with extreme disapproval, calling it disaster, natural calamity, etc.    It's been the way in English language, or perhaps most of the languages in the world, to address the totality of humanness as 'human nature'. We often say, it's my n ature or it's natural for me to do this or that.
